In anticipation of Hurricane Charley, Governor Sanford ordered the mandatory evacuation of residents living east of 17 Business Friday evening.
And to accommidate all those peole, the lanes on Highway 501 just before Highway 22 were reversed.
Around eight thirty in the evening, all four lanes at that point were only open to outgoing traffic - to traffic headed westbound away from the beach.
Today, both Governor Sanford and some residents who drove through the lane reversals say they were very pleased with the outcome. They said traffic was heavy, but moving at all times.
A representative for the South Carolina tells News 13 that if the Governor issues another mandatory evacuation, the lane reversals will be used again.
