As a citizen of South Carolina, and as someone born and raised in this great state, I would like to respectfully request that the Confederate Battle Flag remain flying on the grounds of the State House. I understand that the General Assembly retains the authority to remove or to keep the flag, but I believe that the Governor should do everything in her power to see that it remains flying. That flag, as every educated South Carolinian knows, does not represent racism, and it never has. It has been used by racists, but it was never designed or intended for them. As someone who personally flys this flag, and as someone who identifies with it more strongly than any other flag, I ask you to please do everything to keep it. Thousands of South Carolinians died under that flag. Do not let their sacrifice be forgotten.
