COLUMBIA,
S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina House member is calling on the Dixie
Chicks to perform a free concert for troops.
Rep. Catherine Ceips, R-Beaufort, is sponsoring a resolution
calling for the country music group to perform for South Carolina
troops and their families.
The Dixie Chicks are scheduled to perform their first concert on
their U.S. tour in Greenville this May.
Lead singer Natalie Maines reportedly told a London audience last
week, in reference to President George W. Bush's push for military
action against Iraq, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president
of the United States is from Texas."
Radio stations nationwide are boycotting the Dixie Chicks, even
though Maines - a Lubbock, Texas, native - publicly apologized for
her statement in London.
Ceips said a free concert for troops would be good way for Maines
to show she's sorry.
"If they are really serious about apologizing to the president
and our troops, I can't think of a better way than to perform for
our troops and their families here in South Carolina," Ceips said.
"These men and women of the military are the backbone of our country
and it's time our stars realize that."
