When it comes to getting your vote, politicians go after it in more ways than one. There's power in every choice they make from the suit or tie a politician wears to a debate, to the colors and logos used in their commercials.
We found out some familiar marketing is making a comeback in the Lt. Governor?s race, an approach that would get most politicians in trouble for breaking the law.
The candidate involved is Mike Campbell. He's decided to stick with tradition, in more ways than one.
Must have been an "mmm mmm good" idea. Using this familiar logo, Carroll Campbell ran for Lt. Governor, state Senate, and Governor of South Carolina twice!
"I do think I look like one of the Campbell's kids on the old cans," Mike Campbell joked.
But that's not why Mike Campbell is going with dad's old logo. He's running for the number two job in South Carolina, reviving a logo we haven't seen in South Carolina politics in more than a decade.
"So we decided to use it. That's just a small way that I can say 'Hey dad I'm thinking about you' during this process," Campbell told News Channel 7. "In south Carolina that logo is as much related to Carroll Campbell, as it is to Campbell Soup," he said.
When we contacted Campbell Soup, at first the company told us the Campbell campaign was breaking the law. "This is clearly an example of Trademark infringement," the company wrote. Campbell's continued, "Interestingly, we see this sort of misuse of our trademark often from politicians across the country named 'Campbell'."
"There's alot of marketing in politics," Converse College professor Dr. Marlene Preedom told us.?
The marketing professor wasn't surprised to hear Campbell's Soup usually makes politicians stop using the logo. And she's amazed to hear the company is making an exception.
Long before Carroll Campbell was cutting deals that landed BMW and FUJI, he cut a deal with Campbell Soup, to use a version of the logo that made minor changes to the letter 'e'.?
"I think it was probably just a gentlemen?s understanding," Campbell said.
And in this email, the company told News Channel 7 they'll honor that handshake in 2005.
"So if the company is indeed giving him permission, it's very, very powerful for him to have that." Dr. Preedom said.
Campbell says he and his dad can no longer talk about this race. Alzheimers is slowly stealing the political legend. Mike Campbell is thankful the soup company understands.
"It's a logo that I'm proud of, and proud to use and as long as they're okay with it, we're going to continue to do it," the younger Campbell told us during an interview.
The Campbell Soup logo is one of the world's most recognizable brands. Just a couple of years ago, it was listed as the sixth most recognizable brand in the United States.?
Keep this in mind too, the race for Lt. Governor could get even more nostalgic if Campbell survives a primary contest with the current Lt. Governor, Republican Andre Baurer. Fritz Hollings' son Michael is running for the Democrats. We could potentially see a Hollings and Campbell battle like we haven't seen for decades in South Carolina.
