(Columbia-AP) March 25, 2004 -- Small business advocates Thursday urged the Senate to approve Governor Mark Sanford's plan to reduce the state's income tax.
Sanford wants to cut the state's top income tax rate from seven percent to 4.75 percent during the next decade. The governor says the move ultimately puts more money in the pockets of small business owners.
Hunter Howard, president of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, says the tax relief puts small businesses on a level playing field with larger companies.
The plan has sailed through the House. But, the bill still faces a tough battle among senators who say there are other priorities in a tight budget year.
