MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The annual federal
transportation budget includes $2 million for Interstate 73,
proposed to link Michigan and the Grand Strand.
The money approved Friday is in addition to $81 million for I-73
approved in the five-year high way bill that passed in July.
The road was designated by Congress in 1991 to connect Detroit
and Charleston, but the route was revised to run between Sault Ste.
Marie, Mich., and Myrtle Beach.
Rep. Alan Clemmons, R-Myrtle Beach, chairs the South Carolina
I-73 Association and says the state's federal delegation promised
more money for the road each year and they are following
through.
Planning is under way on the 60-mile segment of I-73 in South
Carolina. A preferred route for the section between I-95 and the
Myrtle Beach area is expected to be presented to the public next
month.
Planning for preliminary routes between I-95 and I-74 near
Hamlet, N.C. began late in the summer.
