Dr Rodgers' office (Bonneau/Francis Marion National Forest) has several new cases of tick borne diseases every year that cause this same condition! The neurological condition known as autoimmune encephalitis is NOT RARE. It is actually the RESULT of any of a number of causes, such as CFS/ME, Lyme, RMSF, and a wide range of other vector borne infections (bacterial, viral and parasitic). Emerging research is showing that "conditions" such as MS, Fibromyalgia, PANS, PANDAS, even Aspberger's, are likely all linked in this together. Autoimmune (or Neuroimmune as some doctors label it) encephalitis/encephomylatis is an ongoing symptom that "flares", especially during times of mental, but most especially physical stress, and can be severe enough to render a person nonfunctional for a nonspecific period of time. When the swelling wanes, functionality returns. My daughter is living proof of the extremes of effects this symptom can have on a patient. Proper treatment and management is key to living a fully functioning, almost normal life and being completely bed ridden and mentally nonfunctional (or worse depending on the age of onset and a variety of other factors). I have been in touch with this mother for several weeks now. Her young adult daughter was taken by ambulance to a NY hospital after a minor car accident in another state (she is a resident of NJ, not NY) and has been held hostage there ever since. She HAS the legal right to leave, but the NY court refused to uphold that right. Because she is over 18, her parents have no legal rights to protect her without a Medical Power of Attorney (which almost no one in this country has, but all should). This could happen to my own daughter. This could happen to any of the people I know with ADD/ADHD, Bi-Polar, or any of the other conditions I've named. It could happen to anyone who is suffering a brain injury, stroke or even concussion. Encephalitis literally translates to swelling of the spinal cord and Encephomylitis translates to swelling of the brain and spinal cord. When Doctors, Hospitals and Courts WILLFULLY and BLATANTLY ignore the patient's medical history, regular doctors, and long term care givers, imminent danger is present. They won't even allow her transfer to a facility in her home state!!!!!! This is indeed a true hostage situation. I am asking for SC to lead the way with a Patient's Bill of Rights that would prevent this from happening on our state. I am also asking our Governor, whom I have voted for twice, and have NEVER asked anything of, to please contact the Governor of NY and any other persons of influence, to help get this young woman transferred back to a facility in NJ, where her own doctors can take over her care. From one mother to another, I am asking this; and giving in advance, my most sincerest thanks!
