I voted for you and I think you have done a good job. However, I was very upset by the fact that you vetoed the Moped Safety Bill and it compelled me to write this email. I adamantly support the moped safety bill; a bill mandating safety measures and requiring a license for moped use would close loopholes in the current law. It is imperative to protect the public from drivers that received DUIs but get on a moped without any thought of safety. At this time you can drive a moped drunk on the road and not be charged. It was reported that your reason for veto was because the bill requires reflective vests for nighttime driving and helmets for drivers under 21, leading to government overreach. With this line of thinking it is government overreach to require those in a car to wear seat belts. I do not feel requiring helmets and safety vests are overreach. This is public safety to prevent accidents and potential fatalities. It not only protect moped drivers and passengers, but also the drivers or vehicles that find it hard to spot a moped. The Department of Public Safety shows that 50 people died in moped crashes last year, up from 32 in 2014. At least 16 have died this year. I'm disappointed with your decision but I understand it is a hard job you have. I hope that you can work with lawmakers to place safety restrictions on mopeds in the future. Most importantly I hope that those that have lost their license from DUIs or other issues cannot hop on a moped without a license or any regard for the safety of others. We need to close these loopholes immediately. Thank you for listening.
