Spc. D. Logan Tinsley of Chester was one of
nine South Carolinians who have died in the past year in the war on
terror, S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford said in his State of the State
address Tuesday night.
Tinsley was killed Dec. 26 when a
roadside bomb knocked a Humvee in which he was riding into a ravine.
He was buried in Chester with full military honors Jan. 6.
Sanford opened his annual speech with
greetings, then said the state had to remember it is part of a
country at war.
“Whether you agree or disagree with what is
going on in the Middle East, in the last year since I spoke here,
nine more of our fellow South Carolinians have died in efforts to
bring greater freedoms to that part of the world. The service and
sacrifice of men and women in uniform should serve as a constant
reminder to all of us that freedom is not free. Military families
bear this cost, and know the price - and so I ask you to join me in
remembering South Carolinians lost in fighting over the last
year:
Spc. Anthony C. Owens, USA - Conway
SSG Jay T.
Collado, USMC - Columbia
2nd Lt, Almar L. Fitzgerald, USMC -
Lexington
Sgt. John P. Phillips,
USMC - St. Stephen
Cpl David G. Weimortz, USMC -
Irmo
Spc Seth A. Hildreth, USA - Myrtle Beach
PFC
Satieon V. B. Greenlee, USA - Pendleton
Cpl Matthew V.
Dillon, USMC - Aiken
Spc. Douglas L. Tinsley, USA -
Chester
Tinsley was the most recent casualty, the 41st South
Carolinian killed since the war began.
Sanford went from
those comments to discussions of state policy and
budgeting.
Sanford was to send a letter of condolence to the
family, spokesman Joel Sawyer said.
