2000 LT. GOVERNOR’S WRITING AWARDS PROGRAM

GRADE LEVEL: FIFTH GRADE

TIME SEQUENCE

  1. Composition competition should be completed at each school by November 24, 2000. It is recommended that students have at least 60 minutes for writing the draft and at least 60 minutes for writing the final copy. Teachers are encouraged to use this program as an instructional opportunity for improving writing skills. The writing process may take several days to complete.
  2. Judging at the district level should be completed by Friday, December 1, 2000.
  3. All information must be returned to the Lt. Governor’s Office no later than Wednesday, December 13, 2000. This includes District, School, and Class winners.
  4. The awards ceremony will be held Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Columbia College.

TOPICS

Composition is to be written on a common theme. Students should select only one of the three topics. Please be reminded that while teachers are encouraged to work with students and teach the writing process, their active involvement in the creativity of the essay should be limited.

  1. The Olympics can bring people of many cultures closer together. How can an event like the Olympics improve the world?
  2. Tell your favorite children’s story or fairy tale from another point of view. Ex: Cinderella from a stepsister’s point of view.
  3. The time machine rumbled to a stop. As I opened the door, I discovered I had gone back in time. I decided that I would like to visit_________________________(place or person) and find out…
