(Columbia-AP) Uninsured drivers may be easier to catch under a new Department of Motor Vehicles program. The DMV says today that it has started the Automobile Liability Insurance Reporting system. Insurance companies can electronically report policy cancellations and other changes.

The change will make it easier for the agency to find people who are driving without insurance. South Carolina law requires car owners to maintain a minimum of liability insurance on their vehicles. Insurance companies will report cancellations every 30 days.

Owners can be fined up to five dollars a day for uninsured cars. Owners who are reported will be given 45 days to show proof of insurance coverage. If they don't, their license plate will be suspended and they will be required to pay a 200 dollar fee to have it reinstated.
