COLUMBIA, S.C. - Disabled and elderly homeowners would get a tax break based on the fair market value of their property under a bill headed to the House floor.

The House Ways and Means Committee passed a bill Wednesday that ties the homestead exemption to inflation.

The tax break would not be applied to property taxes for past years.
