With an average of 10 adult drownings every day in this country, many of the 60,000 members of USMS want to give the gift of swimming to their fellow citizens. Two years ago, in an attempt to raise awareness of the need for adults to have the skills to be safe around the water, USMS instituted the April is Adult Learn to Swim Month initiative. During the month of April, volunteer instructors from many of our 1500 teams give free lessons to other adults from their community. To put a national spotlight on the need for adults to be competent around water, we would like the governors of all 50 states to proclaim April as Adult Learn to Swim Month. By joining your fellow governors in support of this initiative, you will help to shed light on a situation that many in your own state find themselves. With your help, we can save and improve the lives of the citizens in the great state of South Carolina. I hope you can support our efforts! Thank you, Bill Meier United States Masters Swimming
