Haley, After the shootings and deaths at Sandy Hook and no change occurred I gave up hope. Instead, I became resolved to worry and that no change was possible. I worry when I am treating one of my severally autistic children, as a school based occupational therapist, will I be able to hide them and keep them quiet enough if a shooter entered our school? I worry about the children on the playground at Old Pointe Elementary. Could a shooter be hiding in the woods? How easy it would be for a person to park their car at the nearby Aquatics center and walk in to the woods with a high power gun and take down so many people/ children with a gun and then easily get away. I worry, when I see a new single male at my church that is sitting in the balcony, during worship service. Instead of thinking of how to welcome him I wonder, could he be hiding a gun. Has he heard that our church is considering supporting and allowing homosexual marriage? Could this anger him to the point that he has a gun? How many lives he could take down from that balcony! Thankfully,a lot of this is just a possibility but unfortunately until a change does occur it is a possibility. I also do not feel that any of this worry should be on my mind! My last worry, I feel, is not far from a possibility. My precious husband, that you may not feel is so precious at times, is at a much higher risk of such a shocking injury/ death. He is the Director of the Winthrop Poll. This poll is unbiased, to the point that democrats and republicans can seem to dislike or love The Winthrop Poll as determined on the polling results. He can also receive hate mail from various unknown people in the public. This is what worries me the most. What if someone that sends him this hate mail decides to act? What if a student that does not like his grade, decides to act upon his negative emotion? Yes, we do own a gun. However, Scott will not carry this gun and it is not accessible in our home. However, why should he need to carry a gun or keep it close? He should be allowed to make the choice to not carry a gun and still be safe. I do believe in the right to own a gun. However, I feel that it should be regulated just as driving a car is regulated. As I tell our 16 year old daughters, a car can be a deadly weapon. Guns can also be a deadly weapon. Guns should be regulated, research done on gun safety, and insurance carried by those that choose to own a gun. I also feel that we do not need high power guns. Quick/ rapid release ammunition type guns are not needed by the public. The ban on these should be put back in place! What lives could still be living if it was still in place! I have decided, with this email, to give you the worry that I have carried around for years. I am doing my part by emailing you and handing this worry now over to you! You must do something. If you do not then the "blood" will be on your hands. If something happens to myself, one of my family members or yet another citizen of South Carolina, due to gun violence, and you have not tried to foster change then the blood is on your hands. I want to be a true South Carolina citizen; I want to have Hope While I Breathe! I do have hope in you. I do hope you will assist in fostering change. I do hope you will the person that succeeds at getting change to occur. Sincerely, Robin Huffmon robinhuffmon@gmail.org
