I'm an Indian American, and I have found myself deeply saddened not only by the shootings in Charleston, but by the national response to their act of pure domestic terrorism. I understand that you have defended the display of the Confederate flag on the grounds of the statehouse in Columbia. Today is June 19th, or Juneteenth, the day we celebrate the emancipation of slaves in the Confederate south. Please take down the flag which is a symbol of racist ideology and actions targeting Black communities. The flag diminishes the importance of Juneteenth; as long as it waves, this day is deprived of true meaning - a disingenuous nod towards a just society that we are not committed to in practice or heart. As an Indian American, I stand against racism and inequity. I hope you will join me in the movement to build compassionate solidarity between South Asian and African American communities.
