The state Senate ( website ) has voted to
eliminate the Education Oversight Committee.
The
32-to-10 vote came this evening as senators debated the
state's five billion dollar budget.
Supporters of
the amendment say the oversight committee duplicates functions
of the state Education Department. They say the move will save
1.2 million dollars.
The committee was formed to
help implement the 1998 Education Accountability
Act.
Senators adjourned just before 2 am this
morning without giving the budget a third reading. Senators
wrapped up work on nearly 400 amendments to the bill, but did
not tackle state lottery spending. Senators are expected to
work out a deal on lottery spending today in small
committee.
This is the eighth day of debate on
the budget, which normally takes only about half that time.
