You've made great strides in the past few years. One area that is lacking and one that SC ranks very close to the bottom in our nation in is animal welfare. I work for American Airlines and have been with Piedmont/Usairways/AA since 1988. My second job/mission is animal rescue. At no point since I've been doing rescue which I've been doing my entire adult life, but at no point has animal welfare been even remotely an issue for any governing body in our state. If you would walk through any smaller county animal control shelter and I use the word shelter losely you would be horrified. The governing bodies for counties in SC turn a blind eye to the horror that goes on. Kind of like with the whole Chesterfield horror a few years ago. It is a disgrace to not have at the very least the Department of Agriculture oversee all animal shelter to hold all to a higher standard. When my group has to transport close to 400 animals a year from our local kill shelters to rescue groups in the north east where they have spay/neuter laws in place and animal protection laws, that means we have a huge problem here in SC. We are just one rescue group, there are hundreds of others in our state doing the same thing! It seems that our state and local governments are happy to turn a blind eye. Our shelter in Chester County has been ignored by local government for so long that the place is falling apart. On a number of occasions just this year animals have been able to get loose and kill other animals inside the shelter! Two weeks ago a court hold dog in one kennel was able to grab another dog in the kennel next to it from under the fencing and by the time someone found this the dog had torn one leg from Chaisty's body and had a second almost removed! Can you imagine the pain this poor girl endure before dying! You have a lot of people in SC that are animal rescuers and I can tell you we are all absolutely ashamed that SC looks like a bunch of uncivilized idiots. We desperately need shelter standards and someone to oversee them. Our SC animal protection laws are nothing more than a joke and they need a serious overhaul. Dogs and cats are not wild or worthless. I am not sure if you have an animal but if you do can you imagine that animal spending even one day in a shelter where they can barely turn around in whatever enclose they are thrown into, they have to lay in their own waste and when it is cleaned by a SC inmate that inmate sprays you pet with chemicals and cold water when it's 50 degrees or colder and all they have to lay on is that wet concrete. Most animals entering our shelters are sweet, loving animals! Their only mistake is having irresponsible, heartless owners that allow them to continuously breed and then dump them at the shelter, forcing SC tax payers to bare the expense of killing wonderful animals. I do not want to be embarrassed to be a SC native anymore!!! I am begging you to do something to help our SC animals not be victims of SC resident any longer. 206.74.0.53
