Story last updated at 7:31 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2003 Bad timing The state House of Representatives should have listened
to the South Carolina Troopers' Association, which supported Gov. Mark
Sanford's veto of a bill to provide $500,000 for a memorial for slain law
enforcement officers on the Statehouse grounds. The troopers' group said
the money could be better spent on salaries or equipment.
Unfortunately, the House proceeded with its override, during one of the
most difficult budget years in memory. The memorial isn't a bad idea, but
the timing is wrong.
Incidentally, Rep. Harry Ott, D-St. Matthews, suggested spending the
money on bulletproof vests, an idea that would help save the lives of law
officers. Using funds for that purpose could ensure there would be fewer
officers added to the list to be memorialized in the future.
