 Proposal for DMV Changes
A bill was introduced in the House Wednesday to
make major changes in the Division of Motor Vehicles.

The bill would remove the division from the Public Safety Department and make it a stand-alone agency. The director appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate.

House Speaker David Wilkins says the bill would create a direct chain of command and accountability at the agency.

The bill also requires the Division of Motor Vehicles to enter into contracts with public and private entities to administer driving tests.

Drivers' license expiration dates would be extended from five to ten years for most people. Drivers also could get tag renewal stickers and registration from Division of Motor Vehicle
offices, county treasurers' offices or private entities.
