"Americans are more intertwined than ever before with the lives of people in parts of the world that we may have never visited," he said in his first major speech as Secretary a year ago. "In today's global world, there is no longer anything foreign about foreign policy." To highlight the impact of U.S. foreign policy on our economy here at home, Secretary Kerry launched the "Department of State by State" map (state.gov/statebystate). This easy-to-use, interactive map provides snapshots of the impacts of the Department's work in South Carolina and each of the 50 States, all for roughly 1 percent of the entire federal budget. The map provides information on the real difference investments in diplomacy makes in the lives of Americans. For example, in partnership with agencies across the federal government, the Department helps secure international trade agreements which support more than 37.8 million jobs with customers in 225 countries and territories buying American-grown and manufactured goods and services. For South Carolina alone this equals more than 550,000 South Carolina jobs supported by the international trade of South Carolina-grown and manufactured goods and services resulting in $25.4 billion in goods exports (2012) and $4.3 billion in service exports (2011). The Department invested more than $1.4 million in human resources for its Charleston Service Center. To facilitate work and personal travel the Department issued 237,931 passports to South Carolina residents (2013). These are just some of the ways that the Department works to support Americans living in South Carolina.
