Governor Hodges Issues Emergency Order
Blocking Hog Factory Farms
Columbia, S. C. - Governor Jim Hodges today signed an executive order forbidding the establishment of new swine facilities, lagoons or associated waste management plants in South Carolina.
"We are here today to protect our farmers, our families and our communities," said Governor Hodges.
The Governor's emergency moratorium extends for fifteen days, the maximum allowed by law. Governor Hodges also ordered the Board of Health and Environmental Control to meet at the earliest possible time and consider an administrative moratorium on the issuance of permits for swine facilities.
"We are a state of history and promise. We cannot allow our rich and vibrant quality of life to be eroded by reckless out-of-state hog factory farms," said Governor Hodges.
Two swine facility applications are pending before DHEC. As many as three more applications are expected soon.
Governor Hodges also urged the General Assembly to adopt measures that protect South Carolina.
"I call on the legislature to take action. Toughen our laws and defend our families," said Governor Hodges.
