My dad was sent to Butner (North Carolina) low security federal prison in April 2012 for embezzlement. He is currently in the Butner Medical Facility in NC as he is extremely ill. He is contending with congestive heart failure and terrible fluid retention. He has served 32 months of a 51 month sentence with no behavior problems while serving. I was able to have a bedside visit with him at the prison hospital on Wednesday, February 25, 2015. He is currently bedridden due to the amount of fluid retention he is suffering on top of his critical heart condition. His legs and arms were bandaged because he is now secreting fluid from his pores due to the amount of it he is retaining, he said that he is normally laying in a pool of his own liquid in wet sheets and his limbs normally aren't bandaged but because they knew we were visiting they cleaned him up, as well as his room. My father needs to be in a hospital, he needs an IV push to get the mass amount of fluid off of his body. He is NOT receiving the medical attention he needs which is going to lead to his death. He is only 68 years old, as of February 21. Throughout his stay at Butner he has had several medical issues leading him to hospitalization outside of the facility. I understand and appreciate that actions have consequences but feel that the punishment my dad is enduring may sadly become the "death penalty". He has been awaiting compassionate release since November 2014. I am asking you to think of your own loved ones and find compassion and empathy in this situation. My Mom's health has started to deteriorate as messages and phone calls to the facility are never returned, and questions never answered. Not only is my father facing neglect inside the facility but his family is also facing neglect by never receiving information on his health status. When my mother attempts to call to get information she is either promptly disconnected or feed to an answering machine that that never seems to relay her messages. Please, if there is anything you can do to expedite my dad's release (as time is of grave importance) we would be eternally grateful. I believe my Dad has very limited time left and our family wants desperately to spend it with him. I thank you for taking the time (I know you're all very busy) to read my e-mail and consider my plea. Take care, Kimberly June Mahaffy kimberlyjunemahaffy@gmail.com
