Sanford’s
5-year-old breaks arm Youngest son
recuperating after accident on monkey bars at

First elevators, now monkey bars.
Gov. Mark Sanford’s 5-year-old son, Blake, was recuperating after
breaking his arm Friday at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School around
lunchtime.
“Poor little guy,” Sanford said. “He was on the monkey bars
pretending he was a monkey when he wasn’t.”
Blake, the governor’s youngest son, was taken to a local
hospital, which forced the governor to abandon some duties at the
State House to deal with his family’s emergency.
Sanford said his wife, Jenny, became faint while Blake was
treated and had to lie on the hospital room floor while the governor
held his son’s hand.
This comes more than seven months after Blake became stuck in an
elevator in the Governor’s Mansion. Blake was alone inside the
elevator for about 45 minutes. He was not hurt.
At the time, his mother and the governor’s spokesman praised
Blake’s bravery, especially since he was without his “Bankie-bear” -
part security blanket, part teddy bear. Whether he had it during
Friday’s emergency was not known.
Blake was to have surgery on his arm and expected to be released
from the hospital Friday night, said Sanford, who was amazed this
was the first broken bone among his four boys. |
