Voters will decide today whether state House District 24 will stay in Republican hands as it has for a quarter century or move to the Democratic column.

They will decide between Republican Bruce Bannister, a 32-year-old Greenville lawyer, and Michelle Shain, 48, a Greenville City Council member.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. The National Weather Service calls for partly cloudy skies with a high of 82 degrees.

The seat became vacant when House Speaker David Wilkins resigned to become U.S. ambassador to Canada.

The winner will serve the final 15 months of Wilkins' two-year term.
