Sen.
John Drummond was elected Tuesday night to another term of
office in District 10. Drummond, a Democrat, captured 66
percent of the vote, defeating Republican rival Dale Phillips
of Abbeville. Approaching his 40th year in the General
Assembly, Drummond announced during the political primaries
that this would be his final term in office. “This will be
my last term and I will give every ounce of my energy to bring
the General Assembly together for the good of all South
Carolinians,” he said following the primary elections in June.
“We need to forget party politics and work together to help
the greatest state in the Union.” He could not be reached
for comment after polls closed Tuesday evening. Drummond’s
victory was reflected in similar numbers in both Greenwood and
Abbeville counties, which comprise Senate District 10. He
received 12,301 votes (67 percent) in Greenwood and 5,582 (65
percent) in Abbeville. Dummond, 85, was a fighter pilot in
World War II, serving in the 405th Bomber Group in England,
France and Germany. He received the Decorated Flying Cross,
is a two-time recipient of the Purple Heart, a nine-time
recipient of the Air Medal and received three Battle Stars and
a Presidential Citation. He was first elected to the S.C
House of Representatives, serving from 1965. He was elected to
the S.C. Senate in 1967.
