Mike Campbell, son of popular former S.C. Gov. Carroll Campbell,
will have some local financial help for his state lieutenant
governor bid in 2006.
Among his fund-raisers are Egerton Burroughs, chairman of
Burroughs & Chapin Co. Inc.; lobbyist and former U.S. Rep. John
Napier of Pawleys Island; and State Ports Authority Chairman Harry
Butler of Georgetown.
Burroughs said he has long-standing ties with the Campbell family
- he used to attend church with Mike Campbell's grandfather - and
was asked to support the new campaign.
If elected as lieutenant governor, Campbell plans to transform
the largely ceremonial position into a tool for encouraging
statewide economic development including tourism, "which was music
to my ears," Burroughs said.
Campbell, who co-owns a chain of fast-food restaurants and two
business development companies, is challenging incumbent Lt. Gov.
Andre Bauer.
An item Wednesday on Page 2C incorrectly said Burroughs would
challenge Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer. He is not a candidate.
