Senate panel OKs amendments

The state Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday approved five constitutional amendments that were OK’d by voters last fall, including a ban on gay marriages and a cap on property tax assessments.

The committee also gave approval to several bills that would further amend the S.C. Constitution by allowing several state officers to be appointed by the governor rather than elected by the people. Those officers include the education superintendent, treasurer, comptroller general, secretary of state, adjutant general and agriculture commissioner.

Those measures go before the full Senate.
