(Spartanburg-AP) December 26, 2006 - A judge
from South Carolina has been appointed to a national
board committee studying judicial independence.
Circuit Judge Mark Hayes has been appointed vice
chairman of the committee of the American Bar
Association's National Conference of State Trial Judges.
Hayes said his work on the bench will help him with
the committee.
"I know I probably fail miserably at it sometimes,
but I really try my best to make sure people who come
into my courtroom are treated fairly," Hayes said.
One of Hayes' priorities is creating an essay contest
on the proper role of the judiciary for high school
students in South Carolina.
Many students learn extensively about the legislative
process and executive branch in school, but they don't
know as much about the courts, Hayes said.
