An executive order on your part may be needed to speed up the process. The new code allows for all restrooms in a building to be single-user and for use by either sex (unisex): 1. Solves the transgender restroom use problem by allowing architects to design single-user restrooms in buildings for use by either sex instead of designing separate facility "men" "women" multi-stall restrooms. It also allows the signage on all existing single-user restrooms to be changed from "men" "women" to use by either sex; 2. Reduces waiting lines at restrooms for everyone, known as potty parity; 3. Helps the 21 million Americans suffering with shy bladder syndrome function in society by having single-user restrooms available; 4. Often reduces square footage, and thus building energy usage, by architects clustering single-user restrooms together. Multi-stall restrooms require space for people to move around the room and not to bump into each other, and thus often require more square footage than single-user restrooms that are clustered together; 5. Solves parents and caregivers having to wait outside of multi-stall restrooms, due to being of the opposite sex, creating safer environments. The code is optional, though, as architects are still allowed to deign separate, multi-stall restrooms for men and women if they choose. Thus, you may need to resort to an executive order to adopt this one section of the code now, and require only single-user restrooms for use by either sex to be designed in all new government buildings. For renovated buildings, require one or more Family Restrooms. Otherwise, this will have to wait years for the legislature to consider adoption of the 2018 code. This restroom concept will also set an example for the private sector to follow. This is the future in restroom design and is an amazing idea. South Carolina follows the International Plumbing and International Building Codes. Please contact me with any questions. I might recommend you contact N.C. Governor Pat McCroy and notify him of this as well. The email and letter I sent to his office could be lost in the shuffle. Best Regards, Bruce Pitts Mechanical Engineer 2018 International Plumbing Code 403.1.2. Single-user toilet facilities and bathing rooms, and family or assisted-use toilet and bathing rooms shall be identified for use by either sex.
