New fishing pier at Knowles Island Pier, Jasper County
Dropping a line in the water and reeling in the big one is now easier than ever in Jasper County. A new, larger more accessible aluminum fishing pier has been constructed at Knowles Island on the Broad River.
The pier is located about 13 miles from downtown Ridgeland off of Knowles Island Road. Follow Hwy. 462 to Knowles Island Road. Nearly three miles down Knowles Island Road, just inside Knowles Island Plantation, there is a small sign that states that the State maintained road is ending. Turn left onto the dirt road just after that sign and you're on the causeway for the fishing pier.
The pier is owned and maintained by Jasper County. The new structure will provide better angler access and require low maintenance as well as access to those who are mobility impaired.
The causeway itself is actually the original railway trestle for the railroad that ran between Charleston and Savannah during the Civil War. The rails were removed decades ago, although the burning of the trestle bridge - which was used for years as a pier - didn't happen until just a few years ago. The original trestle pylons, which are still in place, will remain as a habitat for fish.
County government agencies that manage shore-based fishing facilities can apply to DNR for a grant to build, repair, or maintain structures used by anglers to fish in saltwater. Grants cover a portion of the overall costs. The owner is responsible for the remainder. Partial funding for the Knowles Island Pier was provided from the Saltwater Recreational License through a grant from the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.
