Late Monday morning, Sept. 12, S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford called for voluntary evacuation of all areas in Georgetown County east of Highway 17 * and east of Highway 17 bypass in Murrells Inlet. The notice was given because Hurricane Ophelia is expected to bring Tropical Force winds (from 39 to 58 mph) into Georgetown County from 3 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, through most of the day Wednesday, Sept. 14. As of Monday morning, officials expected the storm to make landfall somewhere in North Carolina.
The shelter at Pleasant Hill Elementary School will open at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12.
Because of the weather and voluntary evacuation notice, there will be no school in the Georgetown County School District on Tuesday, Sept. 13. A decision on whether school will be in session on Wednesday, Sept. 14, will be made late Tuesday, Sept. 13. That information will be available at 436-7043 and on local media outlets.
