(Columbia) Feb. 28, 2005 - News 10 recently reported
on the outpouring of support to save Camp Burnt Gin in
Sumter County.
The camp, for children with
disabilities, was in jeopardy of losing state funding,
which could mean hundreds of children with special needs
might not be able to go this year.
There is now a glimmer of hope for the kids that
need it most. Since we've been following the story,
parent Linda Hazlett called WIS to share the good news,
"The camp funding was put back into the budget while it
was in the House Ways and Means Committee. So when it
goes to the full House, it will be in the budget. Thank
you. I'm so excited."
Governor Mark Sanford can still line veto the funds
at the end of the session. Parents say having the money
back in the budget is good news for the hundreds of
children with disabilities who spend a week there each
summer.
