SC Ag Council Presents Annual Farm-City Week Awards
COLUMBIA---On Thursday, April 25, 2002, in Columbia at their quarterly meeting, the South Carolina Agricultural Council announced and presented the Farm-City Week Awards for 2001.
Rowland Alston of "Making It Grow" on SC Educational Television presented Beaufort County the award for Best Youth Event, Richland County for Best Individual Event, and Saluda County for the Best Overall Event. Farm-City Week Honorable Mention recipients were: Calhoun, Darlington, Dillon, Lexington, and Oconee Counties. Saluda and Edgefield Counties were also nominated for the national awards.
Farm-City Week is celebrated every year during the seven days leading up to Thanksgiving. The event is designed to increase the understanding between these two vital parts of our nation and to help achieve unity among all workers---on and off the farm. Throughout South Carolina, rural and urban citizens work cooperatively on projects that show the link between farm and city. These rural and urban citizens comprise the Farm-City Week Committees that include Clemson County Extension staff, Farm Bureau Womens Committee members, and a host of others who share an interest in the health and well being of our state. The South Carolina Agricultural Council presents the awards each year in the spring.
In addition to the Farm-City Week Award presentations, the SC Ag Council recognized two media representatives for outstanding coverage of agriculture in South Carolina in 2001. Lee Harter of the Times and Democrat in Orangeburg was presented an award for his newspapers on-going coverage of agriculture in the state. Mary Nguyen of WLTX-TV in Columbia was presented an award for her broadcast coverage of the SC Ag Councils Ag Outlook Conference that is part of the annual Ag Expo.
A long time supporter of the SC Ag Council, Judy Bailey, retired from the SC USDA Ag Statistics Service, was also recognized for her faithful dedication to the organization. She was presented the award by Steve Pavlesek, Secretary-Treasurer of the SC Ag Council.
