Appearing at a photo-op in Simpsonville, Democrat Inez Tenenbaum again today said she's a conservative.
However, she was once a lobbyist in Columbia for a pro-choice group.
In a state where Republicans occupy the Governor's Mansion and control both houses of the legislature, Tenenbaum's campaign rarely even uses the word Democrat.
When the balloons were falling on John Kerry at the Democratic National Convention last month in Boston, Tenenbaum stayed away.
But she is getting money from Democrats.
According to the Federal Election Commission, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has sent her $34,000.
That's not really surprising.
What you may not have known is that, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, her top contributor is Emily's List, a pro-choice group.
Its members have given at least $112,325.
Tenenbaum's picture is even posted on the group's website.
News Channel 7 asked Tenenbaum if she's worried her ties to Emily's List will make people think she's liberal.
"Well why would you say that?" she asked. "Emily's List is an organization that funds women candidates."
"But it's pro-choice," we pointed out.
"Well, so the Wish List on the Republican side does the same thing," Tenenbaum responded.
But it goes deeper than that.
On the website for Emily's List, supporters tout her as having strong pro-choice credentials and highlight the fact that she is a former attorney for the South Carolina Family Research Foundation.
Tenenbaum admits being a lobbyist for the group.
"I was the attorney and lobbyist for the South Carolina Research Foundation. That's right," she said.
But she claims not to think conservative voters will have a problem with that.
"I don't think so," she said.
"How do you think that fits into their religious framework of life?" we asked.
"Well, I think you need to talk to the Clergy for Choice," she said. "There are a number of clergy who have the same feelings I do that it's a family decision that they need to make. The government shouldn't make it for them."
News Channel 7 did call Clergy For Choice.
They don't believe they have any members in South Carolina. And the group's website does not list any affiliates here.
