FLORENCE, S.C.
(AP) - Lake City Mayor LaRue Alford has been arrested and
charged with misconduct in office and obstruction of
justice.
Florence County deputies accuse Alford of
having counterfeit money and harboring a
fugitive.
Sheriff Kenney Boone says he won't tolerate
public corruption.
Boone says the misconduct charge was
filed because Alford possessed fake currency. The sheriff says
the obstruction charge stemmed from Alford hiding a suspect
wanted for passing counterfeit money in his shop, lying to
police and giving the man new clothes to conceal his
identity.
Lake City Administrator George Simmons says
city operations will not change following the mayor's
arrest.
Authorities have been investigating allegations
of corruption in Lake City for 14
months.
