• Under Gov. Mark Sanford’s plan,
the state would transfer all buildings and other real estate to the
colleges that want to go private.
• The schools would organize as a
nonprofit 501 (c) (3) and agree to charge permanent discounted rates
to in-state students. The plan doesn’t specify how much of a
discount.
• If Clemson University chose to
privatize, many of its service components, such as its agricultural
extension services, would be spun off. It’s unclear whether they
would remain public.
• The plan, part of Sanford’s
upcoming budget proposal, would need the General Assembly’s approval
before schools could act on the offer.
• The plan would be open to the
following schools: Clemson, USC-Columbia, USC-Aiken, USC-Beaufort,
USC-Spartanburg, MUSC, South Carolina State University, College of
Charleston, The Citadel, Winthrop University, Francis Marion
University, Coastal Carolina University and Lander
University.
