The article stated that citizens who are due a tax refund should expect their refund at a later date than is normally expected. For instance, in the past, if a person has filed their refund on February 1, their refund usually was deposited within their banking account within fourteen business days. Apparently, in 2016, if that same person files on 2/1/16, that person should not expect their refund until March 15, 2016 at the earliest. The reason for this delay is because SC Department of Revenue is withholding refunds to combat alleged tax fraud. I am concern about in this in a number of ways. First, I can find no record of any debate on this issue in the last two legislative sessions. Second, when I went to the SC Dept or Revenue site, there is a statement that reads "is worth the wait" with a "fighting fraud" stamp. As it is well known, South Carolina is not a wealthy state. For some citizens, their tax refund cannot wait; they need that money, their money as soon as possible. If you make $153,000.00, which according to The State, is what SC Dept of Revenue Director Reames earns, then I am sure you can wait for your tax refund; however, if you are living in poverty and do not make six figures a year, you cannot wait. I am little concerned this policy was made with no public input. Moreover, this policy just seems to be a decree that was issued, that taxpayers just have to swallow and deal with. Such actions show that, whoever made the change in policy, approved and put up the "is worth the wait" "fraud" slogan, are detached from reality. Citizens who are owed their refunds should get their refunds in a timely manner. I find it appalling that taxpayers are getting punished for crimes they did not commit. http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20160119/PC05/160119297/1505/south-carolina-to-delay-state-tax-refunds-in-effort-to-fight-fraud
