Architects Evans and Schmidt of Charleston started the Governor's Mansion renovation project in 1999. The project will correct structural problems as well as safety hazards such as asbestos and faulty electrical systems. Renovations will bring the Governor's Mansion into compliance with current building codes.

Tours of the mansion have been suspended until the project is completed.
