I work in Blythewood and our office is jointly shared with the Department of Transportation. We are fortunate that we are able to use the cafeteria, that is part of DOT; however I am concerned that the food offered has very little that you or I would consider healthy. According to the website Benefitspro, SC ranks 43rd in healthy eating or in other words, it 7 away from being last. Perhaps - the cafe is leased and is not a state benefit. Is this something that should be evaluated, as the health care of our state employees should be of utmost concern, of this vendor is sub-contracted by the state - should thier menu not include healthier options. Todays options were fried chicken, fried pork chop, baked pork chop, rice, carrots and peas, liver, onions, sush casserole and gravy, as well as grill type foods, including fries, pizza, etc. The menu promotes what I would refer to as Sunday at grandmother's house food, not daily menu. Hopefully, this could result in heathier lifestyles for our state employees and those of us who share the cafeteria. A salad bar with grilled meats, or tuna salads, grilled chicken, would provide healthier choices. Thank you for your consideration.
