I am an African American woman and I have a seven year old daughter who is diagnosed with a condition called Retts Syndrome. Retts Syndrome is Retts Syndrome (RTT) is a unique developmental neurological disorder. RTT is a developmental disorder. RTT has been most often misdiagnosed as autism, cerebral palsy, or non-specific developmental delay. RTT is caused by mutations on the X chromosome on a gene called MeCP2.RTT strikes all racial and ethnic groups and occurs worldwide in 1 of every 10,000 to 23,000 female births. It is typically seen in Caucasian females. I have been my daughter Taliyah Carn's advocate and her voice. It has been very difficult getting the diagnosis from the doctor that my little girl, my little Rett's Angel may never be able to walk, talk, feed herself, go to the bathroom by herself or other little things that we take for granted every day. I want to be a Voice for the World and Parents who are struggling with a diagnosis and don't know where to go. This movement will be tailored to parents of children with special needs and disabilities. I want to give parents a Voice because who is better to give insight on a day-to-day care for special needs then someone with experience every day. I want to give parents the ability to share their thoughts, feelings, challenges, and success stories for the world to hear. I want to have group therapy where we all come together and share and then seminars where we share with the world. I want to start a movement. I also want to provide parents with information on how to target IEP meetings, how to speak up for their children, different training for parents on emotions, and just being available for the children. I want to be a part of the parents' lives by offering self-care items and information such as breakfast with the parents, dinner, giveaways, drawings, etc. I also want to have a guest speaker each month for the community to be involved, raise awareness and spread the word about what we are doing. I need help spreading the world about what I am trying to do. I am so passionate about starting an organization and just helping this population that people tend to forget about. I would also like to get help and direction in getting it started and up and running. I know that there is a lot of work to do but I also know there is a demand for the service I will provide. I am definitely ready for the challenges and work that is to come. I am twenty-nine years old and want to inspire, motivate and educate the world. My daughter will be the motivation and inspiration for the organization. I also only want one wish and that is to be able to start an organization that will allow parents of special needs children such as me to go around and tell their stories to others with the hope of raising awareness, educating, and inspiring. I really feel this is my purpose and just need the door opened and the right individuals to help make this a reality. I also want to be able to give back to my community and be the support contact for other parents. It is time to tell Taliyah's story and help other individuals like her. I use to think my daughter was robbed of her life but now realize God has used her life to motivate and inspire others.
