The 407-acre, $2.6 billion automotive research park is the centerpiece of current Greenville economic development. It's expected to create more than 20,000 jobs.
Clemson University could be affected by the boycott, as a new graduate school of automotive engineering is at the heart of the proposed research park.
"Clemson not only observes, but celebrates Martin Luther King Day and has for many years," said Clemson spokeswoman Cathy Sams.
Greenville Mayor Knox White noted that the research park would be located inside the city limits and the city already has a holiday honoring the slain civil rights leader.
"Anyone contemplating boycotts should consider the municipalities in Greenville County have been supportive of recognition of Dr. King's birthday," White said.
