What You Wanted To Know From Rev. Al Sharpton

News Channel 7
Thursday, November 20, 2003

Reverand Al Sharpton's visit to Furman University is part of his whirlwind college campus tour encouraging students to vote.
By helping them register, it gives him better odds.  But to win you over, he has to address the issues that hit home.  Like how he's going to save jobs in the textile industry.  "I would immediately repeal these trade agreements if I was President.  And also engage in right to work laws that fall under federal oversight, so people can be unionized and protected.  And thirdly, I would very clearly make sure we return a lot of production, manufacturing to american corporations," Sharpton says.

But a President's job isn't all on american soil.  Since so many of you have sons, daughters, brothers, sisters fighting the war on terror, we checked on where he stands on military action in Iraq.  News Channel 7's Kimberly Bookman, "Bush is asking for 87 billion dollars to go over to the troops there.  What do you think?"   "I wouldn't give 87 cents to Bush for that.  I would give money to bring them home," Sharpton responds.  But don't call him unpatriotic.  "To continue to finance a no winning situtation that doesn't have a military strategy is to say you don't support the troops and don't love the troops."

87 billion dollars sounds like alot to many of you who can't even afford prescription medication.  "We must have a national health plan, single payer plan, that guarantees healthcare to all Americans," Sharpton stomps.  How will he pay for it?  "The money's there.  30 percent of what's spent now is for advertising and pays for administrative overrun.  I would use that money and I would recind Bush's tax cut and put that money there," explains the Reverand.

We asked.  He answered.  You decide.
