Inglis says Sanford 'has a different way of operating'

Associated Press

GREENVILLE--U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis is the latest Republican leader to speak out about Gov. Mark Sanford, saying he has only limited contact with the governor's office.

Although he said Sanford is trying to make changes by "attempting some bold things," Inglis suggested a lack of coordination with congressional offices.

"Mark has a different way of operating," Inglis told The Greenville News for a story Tuesday. "It's a different style. We don't get much contact in that way."

Inglis said Sanford has an "allow-things-to-grow kind of style rather than direct-their-growth."

Joel Sawyer, Sanford's spokes-man, said the governor has made clear his legislative priorities and goals for the state through his executive budget, his travels across the state and one-on-one conversations with legislators and members of the congressional delegation.

Sanford has had a rocky relationship with the Republican-controlled Legislature. Now some Republican business leaders, upset about the state's lagging economy, are actively seeking a candidate to challenge him for re-election next year.

He has been criticized recently by new House Speaker Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston, and last week U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett said "more could be done" by Sanford to improve the state's economy.

Inglis, however, cautioned against comparing the economic records of Sanford and Gov. Carroll Campbell. Inglis said the two Republican leaders represent different periods and can't be held to the same measurement.
