Schuman Named Progressive Farmer's Man of the Year

BIRMINGHAM, ALA---Dr. Stanley Schuman, recognized nationally as the expert in agricultural medicine has been named Progressive Farmer's 2001 Man of the Year in South Carolina agriculture. He was recognized in the magazine's February issue.

In 1984, Schuman led the initiative to develop and implement the South Carolina Agromedicine Program, a cooperative program between Clemson University and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). This was the first program of its kind in the United States.

He laid the foundation for other states to establish their own agromedicine programs based on the South Carolina model.

"Dr. Stanley Schuman has made great contributions to the field of agromedicine, and his program in South Carolina stands out among the best in the nation," said John Leidner, regional editor for Progressive Farmers.

Schuman was also awarded the state's highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto, in November.

He is professor of family medicine and epidemiology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

In 1996, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law degree from Clemson University.

Schuman is founder and editor of the Journal of Agromedicine, co-author of Agromedicine: The Rural Practitioner's Guide to Agromedicine and co-author of A User's Guide to Agromedicine: The South Carolina Model.

He and his wife, Joanna, reside in Mt. Pleasant.
