The aquarium, as the name implies, is a South Carolina institution whose mission is education (see mission statement: Our mission is to inspire conservation of the natural world by exhibiting and caring for animals, by excelling in education and research, and by providing an exceptional visitor experience. The South Carolina Aquarium is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. We receive the majority of our funding through the generosity of our donors, members, foundations, and business partners.). The aquarium services school children throughout the state, has done so since inception and is the only such educational institution in the state. It is not a Ripley's amusement park. I urge you to reconsider your veto and reinstatement into the budget the monies so badly needed by the aquarium for critical repairs. Respectfully submitted, Ike M. Smith Aquarium Volunteer Since 1998
