Saturday was a driver's dream at the Aiken office of
the Department of Motor Vehicles.

one was waiting in the long rows cordoned off by blue velvet rope.
On a weekday, those rows would be as crowded as the It's a Small
World ride at Disney World.
That's why the department decided to open six of its busier
offices, including Aiken's, on Saturdays through August.
A quick stop was what Chris Bailey was hoping for when he swung
by to renew his license Saturday afternoon.
He beat the crowd, but he couldn't beat the computers.
A glitch bedeviled the Aiken office's system throughout the day -
stopping business for close to an hour at one point.
Nine customer service representatives sat idle.
"Today's my birthday," Mr. Bailey said. "I was going to come in
yesterday, but I couldn't get off in time."
Drivers who can't make it by the office before or after work
frequently stop in on their lunch breaks, only to leave frustrated
because of the wait.
Despite the exasperating afternoon, the office saw steady traffic
in the morning, said Sandra Sumpter, who was managing the Aiken
office Saturday. The office handled about 200 transactions in all.
"I expected a larger turnout," she said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Bailey wondered what he could be doing on his
birthday if he wasn't stuck at the DMV.
"If the computer was up, I'd probably be in and out of here."
