(N. Augusta) July 11, 2003 - A home in North Augusta
became the center of a standoff on Friday. Investigators
say Douglas Ray, 51, locked himself inside with his
family when a Probation, Pardon and Parole officer tried
to arrest him. Officers say ray violated his probation
for tax evasion.
Probation, Pardon and Parole Director Jim McLain
spoke about the situation at a news conference, "This
individual has communicated threats to law enforcement
agents."
Investigators in North Augusta say Ray renounced his
allegiance to America, but he surrendered around 1:00pm,
after he spoke with his pastor.
The North Augusta case is part of a week-long,
statewide effort called Operation Clean Sweep. McLain
says agents arrested 357 people in every county around
the state who've violated their probation or parole,
"With a warrant in hand, going into dark alleys and
houses, you really never know what you've got when you
knock at these doors."
The roundup included three Richland County men.
Henry Anderson for possession with intent to distribute
heroine. Rickey Young for driving under the influence -
third offense, and Thomas Green for assault and battery
of a high and aggravated nature.
There are 50,000 people on probation or parole in
South Carolina. Each person arrested during this week's
sweep goes back before Circuit Court judges or Boards of
Paroles and Pardons for appropriate action.
Investigators expect
even more arrests in the coming week as some fugitives
turn themselves in.
