Pass tougher DUI bill

Web posted Wednesday, May 21, 2003

As the South Carolina legislature heads into its final days, the Senate will be taking up a House bill that gets tougher on drunken driving.

The bill lowers the legal blood-alcohol limit for DUI from the current 0.10 percent to 0.08 percent, thus making the Palmetto State consistent with most other states, including Georgia.

Not only should this measure be passed because it could get more drunk drivers off the road, but also because if it fails passage the state will lose its federal highway funds later in the year.

South Carolina can ill afford to let that happen. Its road system is among the worst in the nation - some roads are as dangerous to life and limb as drunk drivers.

Moreover, as Sen. Larry Martin, R-Pickens, points out, construction projects are already under way slated to be paid for with those federal funds. Where will the money come from if the bill dies? The state doesn't have it. It's grappling with deep deficits.

It would be a shameful act of irresponsibility if the DUI bill is not approved by both chambers before adjournment.
