COLUMBIA, S.C. - The state's revenue
forecasters said Wednesday they're on target to meet revised state
tax collection estimates.
In August, the Board of Economic Advisors cut $108 million from
its estimate of what the state should expect to collect in taxes and
other revenue during the fiscal year that began July 1.
That 2 percent reduction prompted the state Budget and Control
Board to tap a reserve fund and tell agencies to set aside 1 percent
of their budgets, or about $43 million, to keep the state's $5
billion budget in balance.
Since then, the BEA has been keeping a closer eye on state
revenue. During Wednesday's working group meeting, the board said
revenues are growing at about 2 percent. That's "dead on" with the
revised estimate, BEA Chairman John Rainey said.
"We're still guardedly optimistic we can make our numbers,"
Rainey said.
The board will consider the working group recommendation not to
change the estimate when it meets again in November.
