A recent graduate of Trident Tech, she started when the plant opened as a member of lab staff with a single goal to provide for her children. She moved to Goose Creek and immersed herself and her family into the local community. While working at Mount Holly she has purchased her groceries in the local markets, paid for her children to participate in local recreational activities, and shopped in a wide variety of the Tri-County shops. Her time at Mount Holly afforded her time to volunteer in local schools reading to under served children. She has been a member of Charlestowne Landing, the South Carolina Aquarium, Charleston History Museum and the Lowcountry Children Museum. While doing all this she has earned Bachelor's in Accounting from Charleston Southern University just months before her second child earned a degree from the University of South Carolina. She used her knowledge of both science and business to recommend a cost saving machine that could do her chemical analysis without the manual intervention it once required. Essentially, doing away with her position. She moved from the lab to the shipping depart and into metal scheduling where she is today. Her work has made it possible for her to raise three productive adults as a single mother all while feeding the LOCAL economy. She is my HERO. She has used her time at Mount Holly to teach me and my siblings about hard work, perseverance, and responsibility. She certainly isn't alone. She is 1 of 600 individuals who pour themselves into the production of aluminum at Mount Holly everyday. Many of them, like my mother, have done so for YEARS. I believe my mother's position at Mount Holly has had an immeasurable impact on the "local" community and its economy for the last 30 year. If she isn't working, she might leave town to visit my siblings living out of state pouring her now limited resources into other economies. She might not have the funds to support many local non-for-profit organizations. If she has to move to take a job, not only will the state loose her direct inputs into the economy, but there will be indirect impact as well. It might mean my 3 children will no longer be able to participate in local recreational activities because she takes them to the small business where they learn to dance. It will mean I stop shopping in Goose Creek stores as I will no longer have a reason to visit on a regular basis. And she is 1 of 600. Please do not bury your head in the sand. Get involved and help these two organizations come to an agreement for the people of Mount Holly as we are all South Carolinians.
